1972 Chevelle Malibu factory big-block car with a replacement 402, bidding at $14,350
Factory 402 Malibu hardtop with a clean title and a cheap early bid; a good base for a restomod.
1972 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu
Sold Why we picked it
Why we picked it: the VIN (1D37U...) shows this Malibu Sport Coupe left the factory with a 402 big-block, which is uncommon for a non-SS car. The seller says the engine has since been replaced with another modified 402, backed by a 3-speed automatic. It wears red paint with black stripes and a black vinyl top, has a cowl-induction hood and SS badges, and comes with a clean Florida title.
The seller bought it at auction years ago planning a restomod and is now selling because of a move. With 8 days left the bid sits at $14,350, well below what driver-grade 1972 Malibus have been bringing. It is a sensible starting point for a pro-touring Chevelle, as long as the body checks out.
The value check
When we found it, the bid was $14,850. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $22,000–$40,000, so the middle of the market is about $31,000. That put this car 52% under.
Driver-grade 1972 Malibu coupes have sold for about $18.7k to $45k in recent months, with a highly original car at $37,400 and a 454 SS clone bid to $21,500. At $14,350 the bid is about 54% under the $31,000 midpoint, but there are 8 days left and bids usually climb.

What to check
- Auction ends Oct 21 and bids usually climb; reserve status is not stated.
- Not numbers matching: the 402 is a replacement, and the SS badges are added, so value it as a modified Malibu, not an SS.
- Rust is not mentioned in the listing; inspect the rear window channel under the vinyl top, trunk pan, lower quarters, floor pans and the body mounts.
- Known paint chips on the nose; mileage is TMU.
- Ask for the cowl tag and any receipts for the engine work.
Making it drive like new
A 1972 A-body takes well to bolt-in upgrades: tubular arms and coilovers, a big-brake disc kit on all four corners, and a 4L80E or a modern overdrive automatic behind the 402. Add a fuel-injection conversion, subframe connectors and modern seat belts, and it becomes a strong road car without cutting the body.
