Why we picked it

Why we picked it: the VIN (242379R...) decodes to a genuine 1969 GTO hardtop. The dealer calls it a great-running, driver-quality car that was refinished in its original blue and had one owner for about 25 years. It runs a non-matching 400 with an automatic, and the dealer says the car's original block comes with it, which helps any future restoration.

Driver-grade 1968-69 GTOs have been selling for roughly $31,000 to $47,000, so this one is about 29 percent under the middle of that range. The dealer's page says it has been in stock since May 2025, so there may be room to negotiate. Ask why it has sat that long and get a full set of underside photos.

The value check

The seller is asking $27,621. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $31,000–$47,300, so the middle of the market is about $39,150. That put this car 29% under.

1968-69 GTO hardtops in driver condition sold for about $31,300 to $47,300 at BaT, Mecum and Barrett-Jackson in Aug-Oct 2026; projects brought about $20,500.

Where the numbers come from:

What to check

  • Engine in the car is not original; confirm the included block's date code and casting
  • The dealer page has been up since May 2025; ask why it has not sold
  • Check the rear window channel, trunk pan, lower quarters and frame rails behind the rear wheels, common GTO rust areas
  • Mileage is shown as 1; true mileage unknown
  • Confirm title status and ask for a PHS document to confirm the factory options

Making it drive like new

Keep the spare original block for value and build the running 400 for torque. Add front disc brakes, a 4L60E or 4L70E overdrive automatic, boxed rear control arms with a rear sway bar, and 17-inch Rally II-style wheels on modern tires for a GTO that tours comfortably.

6 builders make a complete chassis for the 1968–72 Chevelle, GTO & GM A-body. Compare them side by side, along with what it takes to stiffen the factory frame.
