Why we picked it

The VIN begins 34477, which decodes to a genuine 442 Sports Coupe rather than a Cutlass clone, and the seller has owned it for 26 years. During that time the seller rebuilt the 455 and the three-speed automatic, added aluminum heads, an Edelbrock intake, a Holley carburetor, a performance cam and Hooker headers, then repainted it in Astro Blue and re-chromed the bumpers. A new fuel tank and lines, refreshed brakes and new tires came with that work. The car comes with a clean Rhode Island title and a folder of records.

At $17,000 with about six days left, the bid is well below the $26,750 to $49,167 that driver 442s have sold for online this year. This is the pillared Sports Coupe with an automatic, and the page does not say the 455 is the original engine, so expect it to finish nearer the bottom of that range. Even a final price in the low $20,000s would still leave room under comparable cars.

The value check

The current bid is $27,750. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $26,750–$49,167, so the middle of the market is about $37,958.50. That put this car 27% under. Bids usually climb in the final hours, so the discount will likely shrink.

Recent online sales of driver-grade 1969-70 442s run from $26,750 (a 1969 400 Holiday Coupe with rust, Hagerty, May 2026) to $49,167 (a 1970 455 Holiday Coupe with a 3-speed manual, Hagerty, April 2026). The current $17,000 bid is about 55% under that midpoint, though this pillared, automatic car with an unconfirmed engine should land toward the low end, and bids usually climb before the close.

Where the numbers come from:

What to check

  • The listing does not say whether the 455 is the car's original engine. Ask for the block code and date, and assume it is a replacement until proven otherwise.
  • The page says nothing about rust. Check the rear window channel under the vinyl top, the trunk floor and drop-offs, the lower quarters and the cowl.
  • The Landau vinyl top can hide rust in the roof and sail panels. Press around the top's edges for bubbling.
  • Mileage is listed as 54,000 TMU (true mileage unknown), so judge the car by its condition and records, not the odometer.
  • The listing mentions both a bench seat and front buckets. Confirm the seating and trim tag before bidding.
  • The reserve status is not stated, and bids usually climb near the close.

Making it drive like new

The rebuilt 455 already has aluminum heads and good induction, so the easy upgrades are in the chassis. Tubular control arms, a thicker front sway bar and boxed rear arms will sharpen the A-body's soft handling. Larger front disc brakes and a 200-4R or 4L60E overdrive would make it calmer on the highway. Fuel injection such as a Holley Sniper is optional on this engine.

6 builders make a complete chassis for the 1968–72 Chevelle, GTO & GM A-body. Compare them side by side, along with what it takes to stiffen the factory frame.
