39-Years-Owned 1958 Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe
One-year-only 1958 hardtop with a clean title and long ownership, at $16k with no reserve. Ends Oct 20.
1958 Chevrolet Bel Air
Sold Why we picked it
Why we picked it: The 1958 body was used for one year only, and the hardtop Sport Coupe is the shape people want. This one has been owned for 39 years, has a clean Michigan title in the owner's name, and was refinished in Rio Red and Arctic White with fresh upholstery. The seller says it has won first place at shows. At $16,000 with no reserve, it is about half of where we would expect a car like this to finish.
It has the 235 six and a Powerglide, which is why it is cheap and why it suits a restomod. The X-frame and the hardtop body are what you are paying for, and the drivetrain is the part you would replace anyway. The auction ends on October 20, and bids usually climb near the end.
The value check
When we found it, the bid was $22,250. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $25,000–$38,000, so the middle of the market is about $31,500. That put this car 29% under.
Recent 1958 Bel Airs sold for $20.5k (modified six-cylinder post), $27.5k (six-cylinder sedan), $37.5k (Impala 348 sport coupe) and $44k (V8 hardtop). A six-cylinder hardtop in show-winning driver condition should land between the sedan and the V8 cars.

- BaT 2026: 1958 Bel Air 2-door hardtop, $44,000
- Hagerty 2025: 1958 Bel Air Impala sport coupe 348, $37,450

What to check
- The 1958 X-frame has no side rails. Check the frame for rust and cracks, especially at the rear kick-ups and the center X.
- Look for rust in the lower rear quarters, the trunk floor, the floor pans under the carpet, and the rocker panels.
- Rust is not mentioned, and flaws are only shown in photos. Ask for undercarriage photos or get an inspection.
- The 1958 trim and glass are one-year parts and cost more than Tri-Five parts. Check that all the trim is there.
- The clock is disconnected. Confirm what else in the 6-volt-era wiring has been changed or left as it was.
Making it drive like new
Swap the 235 six and Powerglide for an LS or small-block with a 4L60E or 700R4. Add a front disc brake kit and a dual master cylinder, and replace the steering box with a modern box or a rack. Box or reinforce the X-frame, add an aftermarket coil-over or air setup made for 1958-64 cars, and fit a modern 12-volt wiring harness.
4 builders make a complete chassis for the 1958–64 Impala, Bel Air & Biscayne. Compare them side by side, along with what it takes to stiffen the factory frame.
