1988 Porsche 930 Turbo coupe, matching numbers, 54k miles, bid at $29,750 with reserve

Clean-title, matching-numbers 930 with recent engine-out service; the reserve will hold the price well above the current bid.

Why we picked it

This Guards Red 1988 930 Turbo coupe has a black interior, the 4-speed manual, and 54,172 miles. The seller says the engine and transmission are matching numbers. It has a clean title and a clean CARFAX, and it was stored in a climate-controlled hangar. In October 2022, at about 53,275 miles, Porsche Westlake did an engine-out service for oil leaks, covering the crank seals, valve cover gaskets, cam oil lines, plugs and belts. A new voltage regulator followed in November 2022. The left front fender and the driver's door were professionally repainted.

The current bid is $29,750 on a reserve auction ending November 2. Comparable US cars sold for $121,000 to $137,000, so the bid is far below the market, and the reserve is almost certainly much higher. Bids usually climb steeply, so watch it as a market check unless the final bidding stays well under $114,000.

The value check

The current bid is $101,500. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $114,000–$137,000, so the middle of the market is about $125,500. That put this car 19% under. Bids usually climb in the final hours, so the discount will likely shrink.

US 1988 930 coupes with 45k to 99k miles sold for $121,000 (March 2025) and $137,000 (July 2025), and one with 95k miles was bid to $114,000 without selling. Low-mileage cars brought more than $210,000. Classic.com's benchmark for the 1988 coupe is $149,231.

Where the numbers come from:

What to check

  • This is a reserve auction; the $29,750 bid is far below any likely reserve
  • Ask why the fender and door were repainted and get a paint-meter reading on every panel
  • Check for boost leaks, wastegate condition and heat exchanger rust; 930 turbo plumbing is expensive
  • The 4-speed 930 gearbox and clutch should be checked for synchro wear, and the clutch for slipping under boost
  • Ask for the 2022 Porsche Westlake invoices and any older service records
  • Look for rust in the front pan, the battery box, the rocker panels and the rear torsion tube area

Making it drive like new

Most 930 owners keep the car close to stock. If you want it more usable, consider an intercooler and wastegate refresh, modern Bilstein dampers, braided brake lines, and better pads. An upgraded A/C condenser and a discreet Bluetooth head unit improve the daily experience. Keep all the original parts so the car's value as a matching-numbers example is preserved.
