Why we picked it

Why we picked it: FJ40s that run, drive and can be used right away rarely sell for under $20,000 now, and the comparable modified drivers on BaT and at Barrett-Jackson this summer landed between $17,000 and $29,000. This Arizona truck keeps its 3.9-liter 1F six (with a Weber two-barrel replacing the stock carb) and a 4-speed manual with the two-speed transfer case.

The dealer lists a mild lift, a tubular front bumper, all-terrain tires, aftermarket buckets and a canvas top. The listing gives no rust or title notes and no condition report, so this is a deal only if the tub and frame check out. A dry-state truck is a good start for an FJ40.

The value check

When we found it, the seller was asking $17,995. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $17,000–$29,000, so the middle of the market is about $23,000. That put this car 22% under.

Mildly modified FJ40 drivers sold for $17,000 to $29,000 at BaT and Barrett-Jackson in Jul-Sep 2026; midpoint $23,000, so the ask is about 22% under.

Where the numbers come from:

What to check

  • FJ40 tubs rust at the rear quarters, wheel arches, floor pans, and under the windshield frame and cowl; check every seam
  • Inspect the frame at the rear crossmember and spring hangers
  • Weber carb conversions can run lean or stumble; check cold and hot starts
  • No power steering or front disc details listed; assume original manual steering and drums unless shown
  • Mileage is not verified; ask for records
  • Confirm a clean title in the dealer's hands

Making it drive like new

Start with the proven bolt-ons: JT Outfitters or similar power steering and front disc brakes, a Saginaw steering box, parabolic leaf springs and good shocks, and an electric fuel pump with a modern tank. From there, a 5-speed and an EFI kit for the F engine (or a full LS swap) turns it into an easy highway truck.
