1973 Mercedes-Benz 450SL, one-family car with hardtop and a rebuilt transmission, no reserve
Just over 40% under early 450SL driver money with three days to go; rust needs checking.
Sold Why we picked it
Why we picked it: an early chrome-bumper 1973 450SL that has stayed in one family, with its color-matched hardtop and a replacement soft top. The seller lists a rebuilt transmission, a rebuilt power steering box, a new radiator and fuel pump, a rebuilt alternator, a 2022 ECU and all eight injectors, plus an electronic ignition conversion. It sells on a clean Maryland title per the listing.
The seller also notes rust in the lower fenders and rockers, non-working A/C, worn window regulator teeth and paint chips. It was bid to $5,750 with no reserve and ends October 21. That is just over 40% under the middle of recent driver sales, and bids usually climb on the final day.
The value check
When we found it, the bid was $5,750. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $4,600–$15,000, so the middle of the market is about $9,800. That put this car 41% under.
Compared with early 450SL driver sales in the last two months: $4,600 for a 1974 on Cars & Bids, $11,860 for a 1974 on BaT and $15,000 for a 229k-mile 1973 on BaT. Low-teens is the typical driver price.

What to check
- Rust is noted in the lower fenders and rockers; also check the floor pans, jack points, the trunk floor and under the battery
- The early D-Jetronic injection is complex; confirm the car idles and runs cleanly when warm
- Timing chain and guide condition on the M117 V8 is key; ask for records
- A/C is inoperable and the driver window regulator is worn
- Ask the seller which service records actually come with the car
Making it drive like new
Fix the rust properly, then fit modern Bilstein dampers and bushings, upgraded brakes, a refreshed or converted fuel system, a modern A/C compressor and LED lighting for a comfortable restomod SL cruiser.
How it ended
It sold for $7,250 on Oct 21, 2026, against a market value of about $9,800 when we found it.
