Why we picked it

Why we picked it: This is a 1971 FJ40 that the seller says is driven to work every day. The listing claims a clean title, no rust problems, an engine rebuild about 1,000 miles ago, a 4-speed transmission upgrade, a newer Weber carburetor, front disc brakes and fresh rear drums. New wheels and tires, weatherstripping and a rear seat round it out, and new fender flares come with it.

At $19,495 it is well below where driver FJ40s from the early 1970s have been selling, which is mostly in the high $20,000s. The odometer is broken, so true mileage is unknown. The dealer, Classic Car Deals, says the truck sits at the owner's home rather than in Cadillac, Michigan, so call first, confirm where it is, and get an inspection before sending money.

The value check

The seller is asking $19,495. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $16,000–$38,500, so the middle of the market is about $27,250. That put this car 28% under.

Driver-grade 1970-75 FJ40s sold between $16,000 and $38,500 over the last few months (BaT, Hagerty, Barrett-Jackson), with most landing near $28,000-30,000. At $19,495 this one sits well under the middle of that range.

Where the numbers come from:

What to check

  • Check the rear quarters, door bottoms, floor pans, rocker area and windshield frame closely; seller says no rust, but FJ40 tubs rot from the inside out.
  • Frame rails near the rear spring hangers and the rear crossmember are common rust and crack points.
  • The odometer is broken and mileage is unknown; ask for receipts from the engine rebuild.
  • Confirm which 4-speed and which transfer case were fitted and that the swap was done cleanly (shifter, crossmember, driveshaft lengths).
  • Confirm the VIN on the frame matches the clean title, and confirm the truck's actual location before travel.

Making it drive like new

A good base for a mild resto-mod: add power steering, a dual-circuit master cylinder with a booster, a modern suspension lift kit (Old Man Emu or similar) and EFI on the F engine or a 5-speed swap later. Wiring and lighting upgrades are cheap and help a lot with daily use.
