Rare Early long-wheelbase 2.2-liter 911S coupe, the top 911 model of 1971; the seller says the engine is numbers matching and it comes with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.

Why we picked it

This 1971 911S coupe is Lot 34 in Hagerty Marketplace's Thoroughbred Motorsports Collection sale in Savannah, Georgia. It is finished in Light Ivory with what the listing calls mostly original paint, black leatherette sport seats with Pepita inserts, a 2.2-liter flat-six the seller says is numbers matching, and a five-speed manual. Recent work listed includes a fuel system rebuild, timing chain service, valve adjustment, a new brake master cylinder and a new electric fuel pump. It comes with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, 47 pages of receipts from 1977 to 1993, the German order sheet and a clean Pennsylvania title.

The auction has no reserve and one bid at $500 with more than three weeks to go, so this number means nothing yet; bids usually climb, and comparable 2.2 S coupes have sold for $150,000 to $172,500 recently. The seller notes that, given the size of the collection, not every flaw was diagnosed. Even so, a no-reserve early S with documents is the kind of car that can land under the market if attention is spread across a big collection sale.

The value check

When we found it, the bid was $150,000. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $150,000–$172,500, so the middle of the market is about $161,250. That put this car 7% under.

Recent 2.2-liter 911S coupe sales of original, driver-to-collector cars ran $150,000 to $172,500 (BaT and PCARMARKET), with a low-mile Gooding car at $270,000. The current bid is a placeholder at the start of a 4-week auction.

Where the numbers come from:

What to check

  • Collection-sale disclaimer: not all imperfections were diagnosed, so get a pre-purchase inspection in Savannah
  • Check front pan, battery boxes, longitudinals, kidney bowls and rocker panels for rust and old repairs
  • Verify the engine and gearbox numbers against the COA, since S engines are often swapped
  • Tires are over 20 years old; it should not be driven far on them
  • Mechanical fuel injection needs a specialist to set up correctly
  • Non-original bits include a 72/73 front lip, sport muffler and Momo wheel

Making it drive like new

At this level most owners keep an S original. Sensible, reversible updates are modern tires, fresh suspension bushings and shocks, an upgraded alternator and battery, and a careful MFI pump service; keep any removed original parts with the car.

How it ended

It sold for $196,880 on Oct 29, 2026, against a market value of about $161,250 when we found it.
