1970 Volvo 1800E with fresh mechanicals and welded rust repair, priced like a project
Private-party 1800E with a long list of new parts at about half what comparable drivers have sold for.
Why we picked it
Why we picked it: this is a fuel-injected 1970 1800E (B20E engine, M41 four-speed with overdrive) in factory Dark Green over beige, offered by a private seller for $12,000. The seller lists 31 items of work with receipts, including a new clutch, radiator, water pump, fuel pump, exhaust, brakes and shocks, new front seat foam and covers, and floor and body rust repair done in welded steel.
Recent sales of comparable 1970-72 1800E coupes that were not projects ran from $12,500 to $25,000, and most original drivers brought $20,000 or more. The seller does not describe the paint or say outright that it is on the road, so treat it as a driver that may need cosmetic work until you see it. Even so, the price sits close to project money for a car where much of the mechanical catch-up appears done.
The value check
The seller is asking $12,000. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $12,500–$25,000, so the middle of the market is about $18,750. That put this car 36% under.
Recent US sales of 1970-72 1800E coupes that were not projects ran from $12,500 (an engine-swapped car) to $25,000, with most original drivers at $20,350-$25,000. True projects sold for $3,850-$9,000.

What to check
- The seller says rust was repaired with welded steel. Inspect the sills, floors, jacking points, A-pillar bases and the area under the rear window closely, and ask for photos of the repairs.
- Paint condition, running status and title are not stated in the listing. Confirm all three before you travel.
- Mileage is uncertain: the seller says 49,219 but notes the speedometer was rebuilt and may not have worked before.
- Check the Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection; parts and setup knowledge are getting harder to find.
- Ask whether the overdrive on the M41 gearbox engages properly.
Making it drive like new
The 1800E already has four-wheel disc brakes and fuel injection, so it is a good base for a light restomod. Common upgrades are a modern EFI system or a carefully rebuilt D-Jetronic, a five-speed swap (M90 or T5), polyurethane bushings with uprated springs and shocks, a lightweight alternator and electronic ignition, and seat belts and rust-proofing done while the floors are fresh.
