1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass SX 455 with build sheet, bidding well under driver Cutlass sales
A 455, A/C, build-sheet Cutlass SX at a $15,000 bid; bids usually climb, so set a ceiling near $25,000
1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass SX
Sold Why we picked it
This 1970 Cutlass SX carries a 455 Rocket V8 (two-barrel), a Turbo-Hydramatic 400, a 12-bolt rear with 2.56 gears, factory air, power steering and power front disc brakes. The seller has owned it since 2018 and includes the build sheet, warranty booklet and service records. It was repainted in the original Burnished Gold to deal with fading and then ceramic-coated, and the saddle bucket-seat interior shows some wear. It has a clean Florida title in the seller's name.
With a week left the bid is $15,000, which is low for a big-block Cutlass when similar driver-grade Cutlass hardtops have sold between $18,000 and $43,000 in the last year. Bids usually climb in the final days, so treat this as a car to watch and set a firm limit. Even in the mid-$20,000s it would be a good A-body to build on, since it already has the factory 455, TH400 and 12-bolt.
The value check
When we found it, the bid was $19,250. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $18,000–$42,900, so the middle of the market is about $30,450. That put this car 37% under.
Recent sold 1968-72 Cutlass and Cutlass S hardtops in driver condition ran from $18,000 (BaT, Aug 2026) to $42,900 (Mecum, Jan 2026), with most between $20,000 and $46,000. The current $15,000 bid sits about 51% under the $30,450 midpoint.

What to check
- Auction: bids usually climb near the end; reserve status is not stated
- The listing calls it a pillarless hardtop but the VIN decode says pillared body; confirm with the seller
- The page does not say whether the 455 is original to the car; check the engine code against the build sheet
- Check A-body rust spots: rear window channel under the vinyl or paint, lower quarters, trunk floor and the frame rails ahead of the rear wheels
- Paint flaws show in the gallery; inspect the repaint closely
Making it drive like new
Keep the 455 and TH400 and focus on the chassis: tubular control arms, a thicker front bar, coilovers or modern springs, a rear sway bar and boxed lower arms, plus 4-wheel disc brakes and a 3.42 or 3.73 gear set to wake up the 2.56 rear. A four-barrel intake and carb or a throttle-body EFI unit would add a lot over the stock two-barrel, and a 4L80E swap gives overdrive for the highway.
6 builders make a complete chassis for the 1968–72 Chevelle, GTO & GM A-body. Compare them side by side, along with what it takes to stiffen the factory frame.
How it ended
It sold for $25,680 on Oct 23, 2026, against a market value of about $30,450 when we found it.
