1970 Oldsmobile 442 Indy Pace Car Convertible, one of 268, with original paperwork
A documented, low-production 442 convertible in driver condition, with a reserve auction still well short of market.
1970 Oldsmobile 442
Ended Rare The listing says this is one of 268 442 Indy Pace Car convertibles built for public sale in 1970.
Why we picked it
Oldsmobile paced the 1970 Indianapolis 500, and the listing says 268 Pace Car convertibles were sold to the public in Porcelain White with black stripes outlined in red. This one has the 455 V8 and Turbo Hydra-Matic. The VIN (344670M) decodes as a 442 convertible, and the seller says the car comes with its original paperwork, including the May 5, 1970 sale through Victor Belotti, Inc. of Somerville, Massachusetts.
This is not a show car. The seller lists a torn top that is hard to raise, a damaged driver's seat and oil leaks. The alternator and fuel sending unit were recently replaced and the carburetor was cleaned. The bid is $26,000 with the reserve not met and about 10 days to go, so it will not stay here. Even so, a documented Pace Car convertible at a driver-car price is worth watching.
The value check
When we found it, the bid was $26,000. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $50,000–$65,000, so the middle of the market is about $57,500. That put this car 55% under.
Driver-grade 1970 442s sold for $54,320 (modified) and $57,200 (original) on classic.com in September 2026, and Pace Car convertibles normally bring a premium over coupes. A driver-condition Pace Car convertible reached $48,000 on BaT in 2022 without meeting reserve. The $26,000 figure is a current bid with reserve not yet met, so expect it to climb.

What to check
- Confirm the Pace Car is real: cowl tag paint and trim codes, and the original sales paperwork. Clones and tributes are common.
- Check for rust in the rear quarter lower edges, trunk floor, rear window channel, and the floor pans under the leaking top.
- Convertible A-bodies flex: inspect the full frame, especially the rear rails and kick-ups, and the body mounts.
- Track down the oil leaks and check that the 455's casting and date codes match the car.
- Budget for a new top, top motor or hydraulics, and seat upholstery.
Making it drive like new
With a car this rare, keep it stock and reversible. Disc brakes, a radial tire package, better shocks and a Pertronix-style ignition make it a safer driver without changing what makes it valuable. Save the original parts.

How it ended
Bidding reached $45,250 but the car didn't sell (ended Oct 13, 2026). Unsold cars often get relisted, so it may turn up again.
