1969 Porsche 912 Coupe 5-Speed, numbers-matching and bidding far below market

Honest-sounding numbers-matching 912 with solid floors; early bid is far below sold comps, but it will climb.

Why we picked it

This 1969 912 coupe is a long-wheelbase car with the 1.6-liter flat-four and twin Solex carbs, and the seller says the drivetrain is numbers-matching (case stamping 4094939 matches the maintenance book). It was repainted once in its factory Tangerine over black vinyl, the seller describes the floors as solid and original, and the brakes, carburetors and dash pad were serviced or replaced since 2022. It comes with a clean Oregon title, the original seats, stock air cleaners, spare parts, manuals and some records.

When we checked, the bid was about $10,250 with nine days left, and the reserve status is not stated. Comparable 1969 912 coupes have sold for $45,500 to $64,000 over the past year, so even a big jump from here could leave room. Bids on Hagerty auctions usually climb in the final days, so treat today's number as a starting point, not a price.

The value check

When we found it, the bid was $22,000. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $45,500–$64,000, so the middle of the market is about $54,750. That put this car 60% under.

Long-wheelbase 1969 912 coupes in driver-to-good original condition sold for $45,500 to $64,000 on Bring a Trailer in 2025-26 (classic.com lists a $49,617 average for the market); even a project 1969 912 brought $35,403. The current bid of about $10,250 is roughly 81% under the $54,750 midpoint.

Where the numbers come from:

What to check

  • Bid will very likely rise sharply before the Oct 21 close; reserve status is not stated on the listing
  • Odometer reads 702 and is marked TMU (true mileage unknown)
  • Inspect battery tray, front pan, floors, longitudinals, jack points and rear torsion tube area for rust despite the 'solid floors' claim
  • 912 engine parts (cylinders, heads, cases) are getting costly; get a compression and leak-down test
  • Aftermarket BF-Torino seats and other mods are fitted; original seats are included
  • Confirm a 5-speed gearbox is the 901 unit and that the Oregon title matches the VIN

Making it drive like new

A 912 is a light, balanced base for a tasteful backdate or touring build: a 1.9-2.0L 912 engine upgrade or properly sorted 911 six swap, Bilstein dampers with fresh bushings and bigger torsion bars, 911-style vented disc brakes, a stainless exhaust, and modern seats with three-point belts would make it a sharp daily-capable classic while keeping the original drivetrain stored for value.

How it ended

Bidding reached $51,500 but the car didn't sell (ended Oct 21, 2026). Unsold cars often get relisted, so it may turn up again.
