1966 Ford Mustang coupe with a 302, Toploader four-speed and 9-inch rear
A sorted early Mustang driver with the usual first upgrades done, bid well under market so far.
1966 Ford Mustang
Sold Why we picked it
Why we picked it: this black 1966 coupe already has the upgrades most owners add first. The seller lists a 302 in place of the original 289 2V, a Toploader four-speed, a 9-inch rear with 3.50 gears and limited slip, four-wheel discs, Borgeson power steering, lowered springs, subframe connectors and an aluminum radiator with an electric fan. It has a clean Texas title in the seller's name, and service receipts are posted with the listing.
The current bid is $7,500 with about a week left, and comparable modified hardtops have sold for $13,000 to $24,750 recently. Bids usually climb near the end, so treat today's number as a starting point. Even at mid-teens it would still be a fair price for a car that needs little more than tires and some paint touch-up to drive.
The value check
When we found it, the bid was $11,000. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $13,000–$24,750, so the middle of the market is about $18,875. That put this car 42% under.
Recent sales of modified 1965-66 Mustang hardtops in driver condition ran from $13,000 to $24,750 between September and October 2026. The current bid of $7,500 is about 60% under the $18,875 midpoint, but this auction has about a week to run.

What to check
- Auction ends Oct 23. Bids usually climb in the final hours, and the page does not say whether there is a reserve.
- The odometer reads 800 and is marked TMU (true mileage unknown).
- Rust is not mentioned in the listing. Check floor pans, torque boxes, the cowl vents (a common leak point into the footwells), lower quarters and the trunk drop-offs.
- The paint has chips and scratches up front, and the BFGoodrich tires are worn and cracking, so budget for tires right away.
- The original 289 and three-speed are gone, so this is a driver and restomod base, not a numbers-matching car.
Making it drive like new
The hard parts are done: disc brakes, power steering, 9-inch and four-speed. Next steps would be a Mustang II-style or coilover front suspension or at least a Global West/Opentracker arm kit, a five-speed swap if you want highway cruising, and fresh tires on wider wheels. Add three-point belts and a modern fuse panel while the interior is apart.
6 builders make a complete chassis for the 1964½–70 Mustang. Compare them side by side, along with what it takes to stiffen the factory frame.
How it ended
