Why we picked it

The VIN (0F05M155155) decodes as a Dearborn-built 1970 SportsRoof with the M-code 351 Cleveland four-barrel, which was the top small-block in the Mach 1 that year. It is listed with a manual four-speed, red paint, a black interior and 90,798 miles that the listing marks as not verified (TMU).

Recent sales of 351 Mach 1s, including a 91k-mile M-code four-speed that sold on Bring a Trailer for $65,000 in August, put this $35,000 asking price near the bottom of the market. The listing gives almost no condition detail and calls the car modified, so the low price may reflect work it needs. That is why it rates as a deal worth chasing, not a sure thing.

The value check

The seller is asking $35,000. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $33,750–$65,000, so the middle of the market is about $49,375. That put this car 29% under.

Recent 351-powered 1969-70 Mach 1 sales ran from $33,750 (1969 M-code automatic, BaT) to $65,000 (1970 M-code four-speed with 91k miles, BaT), with 351 manual cars at $57,000-$59,400. At $35,000 this car is about 29% under the $49,375 midpoint; condition is not documented, so it is valued against driver-grade sales.

What to check

  • The dealer listing gives no condition, rust, title or originality details, and it is labeled modified. Ask what was changed and get a pre-purchase inspection.
  • Check the cowl vents, floor pans, torque boxes, rear frame rails, trunk drop-offs and lower rear quarters. These are the usual 1969-70 Mustang rust spots.
  • Confirm the engine is a 351 Cleveland 4V (or the original block) and the VIN on the door tag matches the fender aprons. Order a Marti Report.
  • Mileage is marked TMU, so treat it as unknown.
  • Confirm a clean California title and current smog status before you send a deposit.

Making it drive like new

A 351C four-speed Mach 1 is a strong base for a mild pro-touring build. Add a coilover front conversion or a Global West or Opentracker upper arm kit, subframe connectors and four-wheel discs. A Tremec five- or six-speed swap and EFI on the Cleveland would make it a far better road car, and the original parts can be kept for a later return to stock.
