1965 Ford Mustang GT Coupe, A-code 289 4-speed with disc brakes
A-code GT coupe with a 4-speed at about a third of GT hardtop money; budget for rust repair.
1965 Ford Mustang
Sold Why we picked it
This 1965 Mustang coupe is listed as a GT, with an A-code 289 4-barrel (225 hp), 4-speed manual, front disc brakes, quick-ratio power steering and GT dual exhaust. The VIN is 5T07A161968 and it shows 60,500 miles, true mileage unknown. It has a clean Pennsylvania title in the seller's name.
The listing is upfront about its flaws: undercarriage corrosion, rust on the passenger door exterior and driver's door interior, a hole in the lower driver's door panel, worn seat covers and a hole in the headliner. The radiator and fuel tank have been replaced. The current bid is $11,000 with the auction ending October 12. Driver GT hardtops have sold for $22k to $37k this year, so even with a rust budget there is room here, but bids usually climb near the end.
The value check
When we found it, the bid was $11,250. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $22,000–$37,000, so the middle of the market is about $29,500. That put this car 62% under.
Driver-grade 1965-66 GT hardtops sold between $22k (Mecum, Jun 2026) and $37k (BaT, Jul 2026) in the past year. The $11,000 bid is about 63% under the $29.5k midpoint, though this car needs rust repair and bids usually climb.

What to check
- Verify GT authenticity: early 1965 GTs are hard to document; look for GT-specific parts such as the 5-dial cluster, fog-lamp grille wiring, disc brakes and exhaust trumpets, and consider a Marti Report
- Undercarriage corrosion is disclosed; inspect floors, torque boxes, frame rails and the shock towers
- Door rust is noted; check the cowl vent (leaks into the footwells) and lower quarters too
- Confirm the A-code 289 is original or at least period-correct
- 4-speed linkage with an Indy shifter is aftermarket; check engagement
Making it drive like new
This is a good base for a light restomod that keeps the GT identity: cut out and replace rusty floors and door bottoms, add subframe connectors, a Global West or Opentracker front-end package, a 5-speed T5 or TKX swap with the original 4-speed kept, and EFI on the A-code 289. Leave the GT exhaust trumpets and disc brakes in place.
