1965 Ford Mustang fastback, A-code 289, bid at $8,500 with a week left
Factory A-code fastback at an early bid far below driver sales; the photos are the condition report.
1965 Ford Mustang Fastback
Ended Why we picked it
The VIN on this 1965 fastback, 5F09A723430, decodes to a Dearborn-built car with the A-code 289 four-barrel. It has the Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic, power steering, the Interior Decor Group with embossed pony upholstery, the five-dial cluster and the fold-down rear seat. It is light blue over a blue and white interior, has a clean Oklahoma title and is consigned by Gateway Classic Cars in Tulsa.
The current bid is $8,500 with 10 bids and the auction ends October 14. Comparable driver fastbacks have sold for $38,000 to $52,000 in the last few months, so there is a lot of room even after the usual late bidding. The listing does not describe flaws in text or say whether there is a reserve, so study the gallery and ask questions before bidding.
The value check
When we found it, the bid was $19,670. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $38,000–$52,000, so the middle of the market is about $45,000. That put this car 56% under.
Driver-grade 1965 fastbacks sold for $38,000 to $51,700 from August to October 2026, including A-code cars at $41,000 (Hagerty, Oct 6), $45,000 (BaT) and $51,700 (Mecum). The $8,500 bid is about 81% under the $45,000 midpoint, but it has a week to run and bids usually climb.

What to check
- Fastback rust spots: floor pans, torque boxes, rear frame rails, trunk drop-offs, lower quarters and the cowl vents, which leak into the footwells
- The listing leaves condition to the photos; ask for underside photos or a third-party inspection
- 9,400 miles is TMU, so assume the odometer has rolled over
- Check the door data plate and hidden fender-apron VIN stamps against the title
- It still has four-wheel drum brakes and stock suspension; plan brake work before hard driving
Making it drive like new
The 1965 fastback is a classic restomod base. Good first steps are front disc brakes with a dual master cylinder, subframe connectors, a Shelby-style front drop with modern shocks and roller perches, and a rack-and-pinion conversion. An AOD or T5 swap adds highway gearing, and EFI on the A-code 289 keeps the period look.
6 builders make a complete chassis for the 1964½–70 Mustang. Compare them side by side, along with what it takes to stiffen the factory frame.
How it ended
Bidding reached $36,750 but the car didn't sell (ended Oct 14, 2026). Unsold cars often get relisted, so it may turn up again.
