1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe, back after a failed $43k sale
Bid sits near $8.5k on a hardtop that sold for $43k in August; bids will climb, but watch it.
1957 Chevrolet Bel Air
Ended Why we picked it
This 1957 Bel Air Sport Coupe (the pillarless two-door hardtop) is back on Hagerty Marketplace after the winning bidder from its August 2026 auction did not complete the purchase. That first auction ended at $43,335. The seller says the car was recently refurbished: Matador Red repaint, red and white reupholstered interior, and a 283 V8 bored .060 over with a solid cam, stainless valves and dual Carter four-barrels, backed by an automatic. It shows 550 indicated miles since the work and has a clean Pennsylvania title in the seller's name.
At the time of writing the bid was $8,500 with about eight days left, which is roughly 79% below the $36k-$44k that comparable driver-quality '57 hardtops have brought recently. Bids usually climb hard in the final day, so treat today's number as a starting point. Even so, a result well under the August price would still be good buying for a Tri-Five hardtop.
The value check
When we found it, the bid was $11,500. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $36,250–$44,000, so the middle of the market is about $40,125. That put this car 71% under.
Recent sales of driver-grade, mildly modified 1957 Bel Air two-door hardtops run about $36k-$44k, and this exact car (VIN VC57B243258) hammered at $43,335 on Hagerty in August 2026 before the buyer backed out.

What to check
- Check floors, trunk pan, lower quarters and the rear of the front fenders, the classic Tri-Five rust spots
- Look closely at body mounts and the frame near the rear kick-ups
- The seller lists a worn steering wheel and no spare tire
- Ask what the refurbishment covered underneath (brakes, suspension, wiring) and for receipts
- A .060-over 283 with a solid cam and dual quads needs regular tuning and valve adjustment
Making it drive like new
Keep the dual-quad 283 for character and spend the money underneath: front disc brakes with a dual master cylinder, a modern tubular or drop-spindle front suspension kit, radial tires, and a fresh fuel system. A 700R4 or 4L60E overdrive would make it far happier on the highway.

How it ended
Bidding reached $28,500 but the car didn't sell (ended Oct 13, 2026). Unsold cars often get relisted, so it may turn up again.
