1956 Chevrolet Bel Air 2-Door Hardtop restomod with Ram Jet 350 and A/C, bidding at $12,250
A sorted hardtop restomod at an early bid; worth watching if it stays under about $35k.
1956 Chevrolet Bel Air
Ended Why we picked it
This 1956 Bel Air hardtop has already had most of the modernizing done. It runs a fuel-injected Chevrolet Ram Jet 350 crate engine, a 700-R4 overdrive automatic, four-wheel disc brakes and sway bars, and it has A/C, tilt steering, modern gauges and serpentine drive. The seller says it was repainted in maroon about five years ago and the bumpers were re-chromed. It has a clean Arkansas title, and the seller is selling it for a friend.
The current bid is $12,250 with nine days left, and bids usually climb a lot near the end on Hagerty. Even so, comparable modified hardtops have been selling for $28k to $51k, so there is plenty of room before this stops being a good buy.
The value check
When we found it, the bid was $28,000. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $28,250–$51,000, so the middle of the market is about $39,625. That put this car 29% under.
Modified 1956 Bel Air 2-door hardtops sold for $28,250 to $51,000 over the last few months on BaT and Mecum. The current bid is roughly 70% under that midpoint with nine days left, so expect it to climb.

What to check
- Selling for a friend: ask who did the build and whether there are receipts for the engine, transmission and brake work
- No flaws listed in the text; check floors, trunk pan, rocker panels and the lower rear quarters for rust or filler
- Check the body mounts and the frame rails near the rear kick-ups
- Ram Jet EFI: confirm the ECU/harness is the GM piece and that it starts hot and cold without problems
- Mileage is TMU at 3,000; ask how many miles are on the build
Making it drive like new
The big-ticket items are done. Next steps would be tubular front control arms or a bolt-in front clip upgrade, better seats and three-point belts, and modern radial tires in a slightly larger size if the current ones are old.
