1953 Volkswagen Beetle split-window Zwitter changeover car, no reserve
Rare split-window Zwitter needing sorting, bidding under $10,000 at no reserve.
Sold Rare Zwitter cars were built only during the short late-1952 to early-1953 changeover, mixing split-window bodies with the new 1953 dash and parts; this one is dated December 1952.
Why we picked it
Why we picked it: Zwitter Beetles come from the brief changeover between the split-window cars and the 1953 updates, and collectors look for them. This one is dated December 1952 and comes with a correct rear decklid, 1953-only heart taillights and accessory ski racks. The seller says it has a clean Pennsylvania title, currently in transit.
This is a project, not a finished car. It was bought partly disassembled and put back together by the late owner, who drove it only around a parking lot. The engine is believed to be a 1959 unit, the semaphores need repair and there is paint corrosion. Bidding is $9,150 with the auction running to October 28, and bids usually climb.
The value check
When we found it, the bid was $16,500. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $62,000–$102,000, so the middle of the market is about $82,000. That put this car 80% under.
Original 1952 split-window Deluxe Beetles sold on BaT for $62,000 (Feb 2026) and $102,000 for a Zwitter (Oct 2026); this car is far rougher, so expect it to sell well below those.
- 1952 Zwitter Beetle sold $102,000 (BaT, Oct 2026)
- 1952 split-window Beetle sold $62,000 (BaT, Feb 2026)
What to check
- Title is in transit; do not pay until the clean Pennsylvania title is confirmed
- Engine is a later 1959 unit, not the original 25 hp
- Check heater channels, floor pan halves, front beam mounts and spare-wheel well for rust
- Body and paint were amateur-done; corrosion is visible in the gallery
- Confirm Zwitter details (dash, chassis number) with a split-window specialist
Making it drive like new
On a car this rare, keep upgrades reversible: a hidden 12-volt conversion, dual-circuit brakes, a period-correct 36 hp engine or a mild 1600 kept on the shelf-swap principle, and radial tires. Save original parts in labeled boxes.
How it ended
It sold for $26,483 on Oct 28, 2026, against a market value of about $82,000 when we found it.
