1984 Dodge Ramcharger with a 440 and 727 swap, converted to 2WD
Big-block Ramcharger for under $9,500; the 2WD conversion and missing title info need answers first.
1984 Dodge Ramcharger
Why we picked it
Why we picked it: Charlestown Classics is asking $9,490 for this 1984 Ramcharger with a 440 big-block and 727 TorqueFlite in place of the original engine. Comparable driver Ramchargers have sold between about $9,350 and $16,250, and those trucks did not have a 440, so the price looks low for what is here.
The dealer says it runs and drives great and that the floorboards and frame are clean, and offers underbody video or an in-person lift inspection. The truck has been converted to 2WD, though the listing still says part-time 4WD in places, so ask exactly what was removed and whether the front axle and transfer case come with it. Title status is not listed.
The value check
The seller is asking $9,490. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $9,350–$16,250, so the middle of the market is about $12,800. That put this car 26% under.
Driver-grade 1985-87 Ramchargers sold between $9,350 and $16,250 at Barrett-Jackson, Mecum, Trucks & Auto and BaT over the past year. This one is modified, so it is valued as a driver, not an original.
- 1985 Ramcharger Prospector, BaT $16,250 (Jul 2026)
- 1987 Ramcharger LE, Trucks & Auto $12,750 (Jun 2026)
- 1987 Ramcharger LE, Mecum $10,450 (Jul 2026)
- 1985 Ramcharger, Barrett-Jackson $9,350 (Jan 2026)
What to check
- Confirm what the 2WD conversion involved and whether the 4x4 parts are included.
- Ask about the 440: its source, rebuild history, motor mounts and cooling. A small-block radiator will struggle.
- Check rocker panels, cab corners, rear wheel wells and the tailgate. Ramchargers rust there even when the floors are sound.
- The mileage is listed as TMU (true miles unknown).
- Title status is not stated. Confirm a clean title before travelling.
Making it drive like new
Treat the 440 as the centerpiece. Add a modern aluminum radiator and electric fans, a TBI or self-learning EFI unit, and a 4-speed overdrive automatic such as a 46RH or an A518 swap for highway gearing. Front disc brake service, a modern steering box and gas shocks finish it as a usable cruiser, or put a Dana 44 front axle back under it to return it to 4x4.
