Why we picked it

This 1980 K5 Blazer Silverado is a no-reserve auction on Hagerty Marketplace, bid to $3,500 with a few days left. The seller says it spent its life in Arizona and has a replacement Goodwrench 350 V8, a new transmission and a new fuel pump, plus the removable hardtop and the Silverado houndstooth bucket-seat interior. It comes with a clean Arizona title.

Recent project-grade K5 sales run from about $4,600 to $11,350, so the current bid sits more than half below the middle of that range. Bids usually climb in the final hours, and this one has no reserve, so expect it to finish higher. It still looks like a sensible starting point for a square-body build if it closes near project money.

The value check

When we found it, the bid was $4,100. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $4,600–$11,350, so the middle of the market is about $7,975. That put this car 49% under.

Project-grade square-body K5s have recently sold for $4,600 (BaT, Sep 2026) to $11,350 (Hagerty, Aug 2026), with a rough modified 1986 at $5,850; driver-grade 1978 examples brought $13,200 to $27,500.

Where the numbers come from:

What to check

  • The listing notes underside corrosion; check rocker panels, cab corners, floor pans, rear wheel wells and the tailgate bottom.
  • The front driveshaft has been removed and the seller does not know if the included shaft is correct, so check the front axle, U-joints and transfer case before assuming 4WD works.
  • The odometer does not work, so true mileage is unknown.
  • The rear window is plexiglass and the paint, dents and upholstery are worn.
  • The listing does not say whether it drives, only that it starts; ask for a driving video.

Making it drive like new

A good base for a classic square-body build: front disc brake refresh, a hydroboost or new master cylinder, a modern EFI kit on the 350 or an LS swap, a correctly sized front driveshaft, fresh leaf springs and shocks, and a full rust repair of the underside before paint.

How it ended

It sold for $14,178 on Oct 12, 2026, against a market value of about $7,975 when we found it.
