Why we picked it

This is a Verona Red 1974 2002tii with a manual gearbox and its Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection still in place. The seller has owned it since 2014. They say it has a new water pump, radiator and brake parts, plus Ireland Engineering suspension upgrades, and that the car was restored in Wisconsin in the late 1980s. Original owner's manual and factory repair manuals come with it.

The seller is clear about what it needs: tired paint with clear-coat failure, front seats that need recovering, rust in the lower corners, rough steering linkage, and a full recommissioning, since it hasn't been driven regularly and has to be towed. Even so, project tiis have sold for $8,800 to $20,000 this year, so $5,000 leaves real room for metalwork. A price this low is a reason to check everything carefully in person.

The value check

The seller is asking $5,000. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $8,800–$20,000, so the middle of the market is about $14,400. That put this car 65% under.

Project-grade 2002tii coupes sold for $8,802 (1974, BaT, Aug 2026), $12,000 (1972 project, 2002AD, May 2026) and $19,999 to $21,500 (1973 projects, BaT, Jun-Jul 2026). Running original tiis sell for $21,000 to $40,000, so $5,000 is about 65% under the project midpoint.

Where the numbers come from:

What to check

  • Confirm the title is clean and in the seller's name; the listing does not say
  • Inspect the lower corners the seller mentions, then rocker boxes, floor pans, spare-tire well, shock towers and the front valance
  • Check the VIN against the tii-specific chassis number range and confirm the Kugelfischer pump and engine are tii parts
  • Kugelfischer pumps need a specialist rebuild if they have sat; budget for one
  • Rough steering usually means a worn steering box or idler arm; look at the subframe mounts too
  • View the car in person; do not wire a deposit sight unseen

Making it drive like new

A rust-repaired tii shell is the classic base for a 2002 build. The usual path keeps the M10 but adds a Getrag 245 five-speed, vented front brakes with four-piston calipers, adjustable coilovers or Bilstein/H&R suspension with poly bushings, and a stronger 320i-style rear subframe setup. Owners who want more power add an M42 or S14 swap, or EFI. Keeping the Kugelfischer system makes the car worth more down the road.
