Why we picked it

Why we picked it: this is a 1971 Datsun 240Z with the L24 inline-six, twin SU-style carbs and a 4-speed manual, finished in bright red over a black interior. It still has the factory 14-inch four-spoke alloys, and the dealer says it comes with manufacturer's literature and about $17,019 in receipts dated 1989 to 2023.

At $19,950 it is listed under recent sales of driver-quality 240Zs. Stock drivers have been bringing about $29,000-$33,000 at auction this year. The dealer calls it mechanically sound but gives no condition report, so plan on a careful inspection before you count on that discount.

The value check

The seller is asking $19,950. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $18,500–$33,240, so the middle of the market is about $25,870. That put this car 23% under.

Compared to 2026 Bring a Trailer and Barrett-Jackson sales of driver-grade 240Zs tracked by classic.com: stock drivers sold for $29,150-$33,240, and modified drivers for $18,500-$28,750. Projects sold for $6,666-$13,250 and were left out of the range.

Where the numbers come from:

What to check

  • The listing gives no mileage, title status or rust details. Confirm title and condition in person or with an inspection, and note it is sold as-is.
  • 240Zs rust in the floor pans, frame rails, battery tray area, rocker panels, lower fenders and the hatch area. Get the car on a lift.
  • The receipts run back to 1989, so ask what the $17k covered (engine, paint, rust repair).
  • Check the SU carbs, the clutch hydraulics and the rear strut towers.

Making it drive like new

A good driver Z takes simple upgrades well: a 5-speed swap, bigger front brakes, poly bushings and coilovers, and an electronic ignition. If you want more power later, an L28 or triple-carb setup fits without changing the car's character.
