Why we picked it

This 1971 Monte Carlo has a 350 small-block with an Edelbrock carburetor and a TH350 automatic that the seller says was rebuilt in 2018. The seller says a 2015 restoration added a professional repaint in the original color, a new roof skin and vinyl top, new rear quarter panels, and new trunk and floor pans. It has a clean Michigan title. Known issues listed are a rear bumper dent, A/C that does not work, a paint blemish on the right rear quarter and some interior wear.

Why we picked it: the bid is $4,000 with 11 days left, while 1971 Monte Carlos have sold for $17,600 to $33,000 this year. Bids usually climb, but replacing the floors, trunk and quarters is the costly part of most builds, and here the seller says it is already done.

The value check

When we found it, the bid was $6,300. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $17,600–$33,000, so the middle of the market is about $25,300. That put this car 75% under.

Non-SS 1971 Monte Carlos in original-type condition sold for $17,600 to $33,000 at Mecum, BaT and GAA in 2026. The current $4,000 bid is about 84% under the $25,300 midpoint; bids usually climb and the reserve status is not stated.

Where the numbers come from:

What to check

  • Reserve status is not stated; the car may not sell at a low bid.
  • Inspect the quarter-panel and floor replacement work, and check the rear window channel and the lower vinyl-top area for rust.
  • Check the body mounts and the perimeter frame rails ahead of the rear wheels.
  • The A/C does not work; budget for repair or a modern system.
  • Mileage is listed as TMU, and the listing gives two slightly different odometer figures.

Making it drive like new

The long-wheelbase A-body chassis is a good grand-touring base. Add front disc brakes if it has drums, a 700R4 or 4L60E overdrive, poly bushings and a larger sway bar. Vintage Air would fix the dead A/C, and an LS swap fits easily in the big engine bay.

2 builders make a complete chassis for the 1970–72 Monte Carlo. Compare them side by side, along with what it takes to stiffen the factory frame.

How it ended

Bidding reached $13,000 but the car didn't sell (ended Oct 22, 2026). Unsold cars often get relisted, so it may turn up again.
