1968 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S 383 4-Speed, H-code car
Factory 383 4-speed Formula S bid at $15,000; the bonded title and color change need checking.
1968 Plymouth Barracuda
Sold Rare VIN BH29H8B175777 decodes as a factory 383 Formula S Barracuda; the 383 with a 4-speed was a low-volume combination in 1968.
Why we picked it
This 1968 Barracuda Formula S hardtop has a VIN that decodes to the 383 Super Commando, and it has a 4-speed manual. The seller says the car is fully restored with matching numbers. It was refurbished between 1994 and 1998 and changed from its original Bright Red to teal, with a white vinyl interior. It now has a Holley carburetor, Mopar Performance dress-up parts and add-on gauges. The current owner has had it since 2008. The seller notes scratches and chips, a worn mirror and faded trunk carpet.
At this writing the bid is $15,000 with 23 bids, and the auction ends October 8. Comparable 383 Formula S coupes have sold for $40,000 to $49,500. Bids usually climb near the end, and a bonded title and color change will keep some buyers away, but there is a wide margin.
The value check
When we found it, the bid was $15,000. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $40,000–$49,500, so the middle of the market is about $44,750. That put this car 66% under.
Three 1969 H-code 383 Formula S and 383 Barracuda coupes sold for $40,000 to $49,500 between Oct 2025 and Jul 2026. This car's color change, 1990s refurbishment and bonded title argue for the low end of that range.
- 1969 Barracuda Formula S 383, Mecum Jul 2026, $49,500
- 1969 Barracuda Formula S 383 (modified), BaT May 2026, $44,000
- 1969 Barracuda 383 4-speed, Richmond Oct 2025, $40,000
What to check
- Bonded Mississippi title: confirm how your state handles bonded titles before bidding
- Matching-numbers claim is the seller's: verify the engine pad stamp and the transmission and axle codes against the VIN and fender tag
- Color change from Bright Red; look for filler and rust in the quarters, trunk floor, lower fenders and around the rear window
- Check the torsion bar crossmember, the frame rails and the K-member mounts
- Mileage is TMU; the 1990s refurbishment is now 30 years old
Making it drive like new
The 383 already makes the power. Add front disc brakes, larger torsion bars, a sway bar, subframe connectors and a fast-ratio steering box, which change the car a lot while keeping the matching-numbers parts boxed and saved.
