1955 Ford Thunderbird
Sold Why we picked it
This 1955 Thunderbird is finished in Torch Red with a color-matched removable hardtop, a black folding soft top and a red and white vinyl interior. It now has a 312 Y-block, bored .030 over, in place of its original engine. The engine and automatic were overhauled about four years ago, and recent work included hoses and suspension parts. The seller notes paint imperfections and general age-related wear. It has a clean Virginia title.
At this writing the bid is $7,800 with 18 bids, and the auction ends October 12. 1955 T-birds sold for $20,900 to $29,700 in September. Bids usually climb at the end, so treat the current number as a starting point, not a final price.
The value check
When we found it, the bid was $17,500. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $20,900–$29,700, so the middle of the market is about $25,300. That put this car 31% under.
Four 1955 Thunderbirds sold in September 2026 for $20,900 to $29,700, including original cars at Mecum and modified cars on BaT.

- 1955 Thunderbird, Mecum Sep 2026, $29,700
- 1955 Thunderbird (modified), BaT Sep 2026, $21,250
What to check
- Not the original engine (a 312 replaces the factory unit), so it is a driver, not a concours car
- Check the floor pans, the rocker and kick panel areas and the lower rear quarters for rust under the paint
- Brake condition isn't documented; plan on a full brake inspection
- Check the hardtop's condition and mounting hardware, and the soft-top frame
- Mileage is TMU
Making it drive like new
Popular, reversible upgrades: a front disc brake kit, a dual-master cylinder, electronic ignition, a 12-volt conversion if it is still 6-volt, and radial tires. Keep the stock look.
