Coyote swap: new from Ford Performance vs a used pullout
A Coyote and manual is about $17,000 new before the clutch, or around $12,000 used from a late Mustang. Prices and the fine print, October 2026.
Ford's 5.0 Coyote is the modern V8 of choice for early Mustangs, Falcons, Broncos and Ford trucks. Here's what it costs new through Summit Racing compared with used pullouts on eBay Motors, as of October 2026.
New
- Engine: the Gen 3 crate (M-6007-M50C) shows "Not Available" at Summit, which offers the Gen 4X in its place. The Ford Performance Coyote Gen 4X (M-6007-M50H), rated 460 hp and 420 lb-ft, is $11,704.99. It includes the intake, throttle body, oil pan, water pump, balancer, a flexplate for the 10R80 and a harness, but no computer.
- Control pack for a manual: M-6017-M50HM, $2,462.99. It includes the PCM, power distribution module, air box, hoses, oxygen sensors, harness and drive-by-wire pedal. It requires a return-style fuel system.
- Gen 3 control pack for the 10R80 automatic: M-6017-M50BA, $2,284.99.
- Transmission: a Tremec TKX 5-speed (TCET18085), rated 600 lb-ft with a 3.27 first gear and 0.72 overdrive, is $2,895.99. The TCET17765, with a 2.87 first and 0.68 overdrive, is $2,895.00. Neither includes a bellhousing or yoke.
Engine, manual control pack and TKX come to $17,063.97, before a bellhousing, clutch, mounts and headers.
Ford Performance also sells complete Power Modules:
- Coyote Power Module with T-56 6-speed, $20,262.99: Gen 4X engine, T-56, controller, harness, alternator, starter, bellhousing, clutch and flywheel.
- Coyote Power Module with 10R80 automatic, $21,174.99: engine, 10R80, converter, transmission controller, PCM and harness.
Once you add a bellhousing, clutch and flywheel to the TKX route, the T-56 Power Module isn't much more and comes with everything matched.
Used
- Gen 3 Coyote and 6-speed manual from a 2022 Mustang Mach 1, 65k miles: $12,150 or best offer, with accessories, starter, original harness, sensors, pedal and computer. The seller says a standalone harness and programming are still needed. $350 freight.
- Gen 4 Coyote and 10R80 from a 2024 Mustang Dark Horse: $16,200 or best offer, with the same inclusions. The listing gives two different mileages (1,891 and 1,000), so ask.
- Gen 1 Coyote and 6R80 from a 2013 F-150 4x4, 79k miles: $8,000 or best offer, with harness and computer but no transfer case. It's a four-wheel-drive transmission, so ask a transmission shop what it takes to set it up for two-wheel drive.
The verdict
A used Gen 3 Coyote and manual from a late Mustang saves about $5,000 against the new engine, control pack and TKX, and about $8,000 against the T-56 Power Module. The automatics show the biggest gap: an F-150 Coyote and 6R80 is $8,000, against $21,174.99 for the new 10R80 Power Module.
On the used side, budget for a standalone harness and tune, $350 freight to a business, and limited or no returns. On the new side, remember the manual control pack needs a return-style fuel system.
