Our '61 Corvette drivetrain plan: an LS 5.3 and a T56, priced part by part

The Summit cart for our 1961 Corvette's LS swap came to $14,507.87, and it's missing a few things. Here's the full list, what we found and what it really costs.

Our 1961 Corvette is getting a modern drivetrain: a GM LS V8 with fuel injection, a six-speed Tremec T56 and new gauges. Before ordering anything we checked every line of the Summit Racing cart and listed what it still needs. Prices are from October 8, 2026.

What's in the cart

What we found when we checked it

  1. The Sniper price. The cart showed $2,749.95 for the Sniper, but Summit's page lists the 3.5-inch display kit at $1,999.95 (the 5-inch kit is $2,149.95 and the Bluetooth kit $1,899.95). That $750 gap is the whole difference from the cart total, so we need to confirm which part number is really in the cart.
  2. The engine part number. The cart says 150152; Summit only returns SUM-150153, with the same name and price. It's a remanufactured long block with no intake, throttle body, computer, harness, oil pan, valve covers, timing cover, water pump, balancer, flywheel, plugs or wires.
  3. The Sniper can't run an LS by itself. This is the big one. The Sniper 2 is a throttle body that bolts to a carburetor flange, so on an LS it needs a carburetor-style intake. It also has no LS coil control: Summit lists no ignition system, and the harness only supports Holley's HyperSpark distributor. That leaves two routes: Neither route includes the fuel system, regulator or coils.
  4. Two bellhousings. If we buy Holley's complete T56 installation kit for the clutch (below), it comes with its own bellhousing, so the $189.99 Summit bellhousing comes out of the cart.

What the cart is still missing

NeedPartPrice
Clutch, flywheel, hydraulic releaseHolley Complete T56 Install Kit 319-510: bellhousing, billet 6-bolt flywheel, 12-inch 26-spline clutch, hydraulic release and pilot bearing. The 6-bolt crank suits the 5.3. We couldn't confirm it includes a clutch master cylinder.$1,549.95
Engine mountsSummit adjustable LS conversion mounts SUM-7731100, listed for the '61 Corvette's original frame. A new chassis usually comes with its own.$169.99
Oil panMoroso road-race LS swap pan 20159, 7 qt. Fitment list didn't load, so confirm it clears. No pickup or gaskets.$616.99
HeadersEckler's stainless LS-swap hugger headers for the C1/C2, out of stock when we checked. Eckler's LS-swap manifolds are $479.99, also out of stock.$429.99
Fuel tank with EFI pumpHolley Sniper EFI tank for the 1956-62 Corvette, 19-149: 16 gallons, 255 lph in-tank pump. It duplicates the inline pump in the Sniper kit, so we'd use one or the other.$949.95
RadiatorBe Cool 61181 dual-core. The LS-swap version (61237) is rated to 300 hp, below the engine's 450.$799.99
Coils, plugs and wiresNot in either EFI route or the long blockNot priced yet
Transmission crossmemberNo C1-specific T56 crossmember at Summit or Eckler's. It's usually fabricated or comes with a new chassis. Not priced
DriveshaftCustom length, measured after the engine and transmission are inNot priced
ExhaustPipes and mufflersNot priced

The T56's shifter comes with it, but a C1's tunnel and shifter opening usually need modifying.

What it adds up to

Keeping the Sniper route and swapping the Summit bellhousing for the Holley clutch kit, the priced parts come to $19,859.64 including the gauges, or $17,436.65 for the drivetrain alone. That's before coils, the crossmember, driveshaft and exhaust. Switching to the Terminator X Stealth would take off about $180.

For comparison, a used 5.3 and 4L60E pullout with its computer was $6,500 on eBay Motors, and Summit's 5.3 long block is $3,949.99 on its own. See the full new vs used comparison and the LS swap breakdown.

Still to decide

  • Sniper with an MSD 6014, or the Terminator X Stealth
  • The fuel tank's in-tank pump or the Sniper's inline pump
  • Whether the Moroso pan and LS intake clear the C1 crossmember and hood
  • Crossmember, driveshaft and exhaust, which depend on the chassis

The parts list on the '61 Corvette build page tracks what we order and what we pay.
