Why we picked it

Why we picked it: the LX450 is the Lexus version of the FZJ80 Land Cruiser, with the same 4.5-liter 1FZ-FE inline-six, full-time 4WD and solid axles. This one is a private sale from a second owner who bought it in 2001. The seller says it has extensive, well-documented service records, a clean Carfax, a clean title, a clean interior with some wear on the front leather, and an original engine that runs strong.

The seller lowered the price to $13,950 because the A/C compressor leaks, and says there is some rust in the engine bay and on the front edge of the hood. Even after you set aside money for a compressor and some rust work, comparable 200,000-mile LX450s have been selling well above this price.

The value check

The seller is asking $12,950. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $13,250–$36,250, so the middle of the market is about $24,750. That put this car 48% under.

LX450s with roughly 200,000 to 266,000 miles have sold between $13,250 and $36,250 over the last year, mostly on Bring a Trailer, a midpoint near $24,750. This one has an A/C leak and some rust, so it sits at the driver end, but the price is still well below that range's middle.

Where the numbers come from:

What to check

  • Head gasket: the 1FZ-FE can seep at the rear of the head. Ask whether it has been done and check for coolant loss.
  • Rust: the seller mentions the engine bay and hood edge. Also check the rear quarters, the lower tailgate, the frame rails and the rocker panels, especially on a Minnesota truck.
  • A/C compressor leak is disclosed. Budget for a compressor, drier and recharge.
  • Front axle: check the birfield and knuckle seals and the wheel bearing service history.
  • The listing does not say whether it has the optional factory lockers. Check for the dash switch.
  • Look over the service records in person and confirm the title is clean.

Making it drive like new

A good starting point for an overland-style build: refresh the front axle, fit a 2 to 3 inch lift with modern shocks, add LED lighting and a modern head unit, and do a full fluid and cooling-system service. Treat and seal the frame and the rust spots before any lift or armor goes on.
