Why we picked it

Why we picked it: 4x4 square-body Suburbans from 1987-91 have been selling from about $11,000 to $25,000 for driver-grade examples. This private-party 1989 V1500 is listed at $10,000, under the cheapest recent comparable sale we found.

The seller says the truck came from Texas, has no rust underneath, and has been undercoated and treated with Fluid Film. Recent work listed includes a new A/C compressor, heater core, cooling hoses, alternator, ball joints, brakes, alignment, grille, headlamps and tires, and the seller says receipts are available. The 350 V8 and 4x4 are said to work properly.

The value check

The seller is asking $9,500. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $11,000–$25,300, so the middle of the market is about $18,150. That put this car 48% under.

1987-90 Suburban 1500 4x4 drivers sold for $11,000 to $25,300 at BaT, GAA and Mecum in 2026 ($15,777 for a 126k-mile 1990, $20,000 for a 47k-mile 1990). At $10,000 this one is about 45% under the $18,150 midpoint.

Where the numbers come from:

What to check

  • The power door locks don't work, per the seller
  • It is on a 3-inch lift; check the steering, driveshaft angles and ball joints, and confirm the brake lines were extended properly
  • The paint has a 'patina clear coat'; expect faded, worn paint
  • Inspect the rear quarters, wheel arches, rocker panels and around the barn doors, the usual Suburban rust spots, even with the clean underside
  • Title status isn't stated; confirm a clean title in the seller's name

Making it drive like new

This is a good family hauler or tow rig to update. Swap the TBI for a modern LS or LT and a 4L60E or 4L80E, add Hydroboost brakes, and do a 4x4 suspension refresh. For comfort, add better seats with 3-point belts in every row, sound deadening and modern A/C controls.
