1966 Pontiac GTO hardtop with a 389 and 4-speed, in one family since 1968, bidding at $10,150
Real 389 4-speed GTO with family history; worth watching, but expect the bid to rise well past today's number.
1966 Pontiac GTO
Sold Why we picked it
Why we picked it: this is a 1966 GTO hardtop with a 389 V8 and a 4-speed manual. The seller's father bought it in 1968 from Strode Motors in Brighton, Colorado, and the dealer invoice is pictured. It was rebuilt in 2013, and the seller says the engine is the car's original, bored over, and the headliner and upholstery are original too. It has a clean Colorado title in the seller's name.
With 13 days left the bid is only $10,150, and comparable driver-quality 4-speed GTOs have been selling for $40,000 and up. The bid will climb, but family-owned GTOs with paperwork from the selling dealer are the kind of car worth following to the end of the auction.
The value check
When we found it, the bid was $45,000. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $40,000–$55,000, so the middle of the market is about $47,500. That put this car 5% under.
Driver-grade 1966 GTO coupes and hardtops with 4-speeds sold for about $40k to $61k in the last few months, including a no-reserve Hagerty car at $39,750 and modified cars at $46,200 to $50,500. The current bid is about 79% under the $47,500 midpoint, but this auction has 13 days left and bids usually climb a lot.

What to check
- Auction ends Oct 26 and bids usually climb well above early numbers; reserve status is not stated.
- Engine is described as bored .030 in one place and .060 in another; the page does not confirm numbers matching, so ask for the block date and code photos and a PHS report.
- The Tri-Power style intake is not confirmed as original, and it has front disc brakes, Cragar wheels and other changes.
- Check the lower rear quarters, trunk floor, rear window channel and frame rails for rust and old repairs.
- Known issues: heater blower motor does not work, dent in the front bumper, worn vinyl upholstery.
- Odometer shows 950 miles TMU, so true total mileage is unknown.
Making it drive like new
Keep the 389 and 4-speed as the heart of the car and focus on stopping and handling: it already has front discs, so add a dual master cylinder, tubular control arms with a thicker sway bar, and radial tires on period-style wheels. A hidden electronic ignition and better cooling make it an easy weekend driver.
