Why we picked it

This red 1959 Corvette convertible has been stored for many years and does not run. It comes with its removable hardtop, a key and a clear title. The lot shows 68,352 miles, and the engine is listed with a "PL" code and carburetor number 30593S. It sells as-is, where-is through Fraise Auction & Real Estate in New London, Iowa. The online-only sale closes Wednesday, November 4 at 10:00 a.m. with a soft close. At the time we checked, the high bid was $16,200 after 101 bids.

Why we picked it: complete C1s with clear titles rarely come out of estates this cheaply. A non-running 1958 project sold for $48,150 on Hagerty Marketplace in January 2026. Even with the 18% premium, the current bid is about half of what comparable non-running cars bring. Bids at farm and estate sales usually climb hard in the last hours, so set a firm limit that includes the premium, transport and a full mechanical restoration.

The value check

The current bid is $19,116. Comparable cars in the same condition have sold for $33,000–$48,150, so the middle of the market is about $40,575. That put this car 53% under. Bids usually climb in the final hours, so the discount will likely shrink.

The current bid of $16,200 plus the 18% buyer's premium is about $19,116, roughly 53% under the $40,575 midpoint of non-running and needs-work C1 results. The comps are thin (one confirmed project sale), there are 101 bids already, and bids usually climb a lot before the close.

Where the numbers come from:

What to check

  • 18% buyer's premium; titled vehicles are paid by cash or check, local pickup only (no shipping by the auctioneer), with storage fees after 10 days
  • Confirm the VIN J59S103061 on the steering column plate matches the title, and verify the engine stamping, since "PL" is not explained in the listing and the engine may not be original
  • Check the frame for rust at the kick-ups and rear rails, plus the body mounts and the fiberglass bonding seams around the headlight buckets and floors
  • Years of storage mean the brakes, fuel system, cooling, tires and wiring all need a full going-over; the transmission is not listed
  • Inspect the hardtop and soft-top frame for cracks and missing hardware, as both are costly to replace

Making it drive like new

A 1959 roadster with clear paperwork is a strong base for a restomod. Typical upgrades are an aftermarket C1 chassis or a boxed frame with independent rear suspension, power disc brakes, rack-and-pinion steering and an LS or LT crate engine with a five- or six-speed. If the engine proves original, keep it and the factory parts stored so the car can go back to stock.

6 builders make a complete chassis for the 1953–62 C1 Corvette. Compare them side by side, along with what it takes to stiffen the factory frame.
