1986–92 Mazda RX-7, second generation (FC) chassis
This car is a unibody, so there's no separate frame to replace. The way to modernize it is to upgrade the original suspension, stiffen the body shell and fix the known weak spots.
Upgrade the original chassis
- How it's built
- Steel unibody
- Front suspension
- MacPherson struts with lower control arms and coil springs. Rack-and-pinion steering with power assist on most cars.
- Rear suspension
- Independent rear suspension with semi-trailing arms and Mazda's Dynamic Tracking Suspension System (DTSS), which uses toe-control bushings to steer the rear wheels slightly in corners. Turbo and some other models have a limited-slip differential.
- Weak spots
- Rust shows up in the rear wheel arches, rocker panels, around the sunroof drains and in the battery tray area. The DTSS toe-control bushings and rear subframe and differential bushings wear and cause vague, shifting rear toe.
Stiffening the body or frame? We list 2 kits for this car, such as frame rails, subframe connectors and braces, on its Chassis stiffening page.
